Imagine you are the owner of a busy fast food restaurant, planning your monthly budget. Part of that budget is how much you allocate for the procurement of paper rolls. Obviously, you need to know how many paper rolls you use in a month. But how do you calculate this? It would be even more complicated if you were the procurement manager at a big supermarket using a box full of paper rolls every day! How would you know how many paper rolls to procure in a month to ensure you didn’t run out of paper rolls or overstock with too many? This is an interesting and practical question, and understanding it will give you a clearer picture of your paper roll needs. In this article, we will show you how to answer this question and effectively manage your paper roll budgeting and expenditures.

Step 1: Measure the Paper Receipt’s Length

You should gather as many paper receipts as you can, preferably at least 30 or 40. Then, measure each receipt’s length with a ruler. Try to get several groups of receipts representing the different types of sales they document. For example, someone ordering a meal in your restaurant would probably receive a very short receipt, while someone buying food for a family in your supermarket may have a very lengthy receipt. In any case, calculate the average length of your receipts.

Step 2: Get the Paper Roll’s Length

You can get the paper roll’s length using one of the 3 methods below:

  1. Ask the length from your paper roll supplier. Your paper roll supplier should know the paper roll’s length. Ask them, but be sure they are being honest with you.
  2. Measure the roll’s length. You can unroll a paper roll, then measure the unrolled paper’s length with a tape measure (yes, this is a little difficult!).
  3. Use the formula. Since you know the paper roll size you’re using (such as 80mm x 80mm thermal roll size), you can read this article to know how to calculate the paper roll’s length or use the formula below.

Step 3: Do Some Simple Math

In steps 1 & 2, we obtained the average single receipt’s length and the paper roll’s total length. Then we can easily calculate how many receipts could be printed out from a single roll. For example, if the average receipt’s length is 12cm, and the roll’s length is 60m, we can get 500 receipts (60m / 0.12m = 500) printed from a single roll. This is a very practical approach in some cases.

Example:

Suppose you are the owner of a busy fast food restaurant. Your printer uses 80mm x 80mm (60m) thermal rolls. The daily traffic is 150 persons per day, which means 150 receipts are required. The average receipt’s length is 15cm.

So, in this case, you need at least one 60m paper roll every 3 days (60m/0.15m=400 receipts, 400/150=2.6). That means you will need 10 rolls of 80mm x 80mm thermal paper (30/3 =10) every month.

Conclusion:

Don’t only focus on the price per roll, but also focus on the price per meter – so you can get the paper rolls you pay for. Low prices, quality products, and top service are out there.
